Day 1

Ouarzazate Skoura Dades Gorges Todra

Begin your private Sahara desert tour from Ouarzazate with Local Morocco Tours, your dedicated desert specialist. We meet you at your accommodation and visit the city's main attractions before driving via Skoura and the Route of the Thousand Kasbahs to the Dades Valley. We continue to the Todra Gorges, where you spend the night in a hotel or kasbah with dinner included.

Day 2

Todra Erfoud Merzouga

After breakfast we explore the Todra Gorges, then travel via Tinghir, Tinjdad and Erfoud, with an optional stop at a fossil-marble workshop, before continuing to Merzouga via Rissani — the old capital of the Tafilalt region and once an important caravan crossroads. On arrival in Merzouga we meet our camel guide for a 90-minute camel trek into the Erg Chebbi sand dunes, pausing along the way to enjoy the sunset. Dinner and overnight stay in a traditional nomad tent.

Day 3

Merzouga Agdz Draa Valley Ouarzazate

We rise early to watch a stunning Sahara sunrise over the Merzouga dunes, then ride the camels back to the village for breakfast. After breakfast we drive back to Ouarzazate via Rissani, Nkob and the Draa Valley, and drop you off at your riad. Departing from Ouarzazate

Three days from Ouarzazate to Merzouga and back is the format that gives you the Sahara with genuine depth — two nights in the desert, a proper exploration of the oases and ksar villages around Erg Chebbi, and time to visit both the Todra and Dades gorges on the way east. Ouarzazate’s position on the south side of the High Atlas means the desert is closer here than from any other major Moroccan city.

Departing from your Ouarzazate hotel, the route follows the N10 through Skoura and into the gorge country. The Dades Gorge — sometimes called the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs — and the Todra Gorge (300m limestone walls, 10m wide at the base) are two of the most photographed landscapes in Morocco, yet they’re often rushed through on Marrakech-based tours. From Ouarzazate, there is time for both. Arriving at Merzouga in the late afternoon gives you the full sunset experience at Erg Chebbi.

Two nights in the desert means a camel trek one evening and a walk in the dunes at dawn the next morning, with time to visit the nomadic Gnawa encampments at the edge of the erg and the black dunes of Erg Lihoudi. Return to Ouarzazate via the N10 or the southern route through Zagora. All accommodation, camel trek, breakfasts, dinners, and private vehicle are included. Request a quote.

Frequently asked questions

How many days for a Sahara desert tour from Ouarzazate to Merzouga?

Three days is comfortable: day 1 Ouarzazate to Merzouga via the Dadès and Todra gorges, day 2 in Erg Chebbi with camel ride and night in a Berber camp, day 3 the return to Ouarzazate via Tinghir.

What is included in this 3-day Ouarzazate–Merzouga tour?

Private transport with English-speaking driver, all transfers, two nights of accommodation (one hotel and one Berber desert camp), a camel ride into Erg Chebbi, plus dinner and breakfast at the camp.

Is the desert camp comfortable?

Yes — Berber tents with proper beds, blankets, washbasins and a communal dinner. We can also book luxury camps with en-suite tents and hot showers on request.

When is the best time to visit Erg Chebbi?

October to April is ideal — warm days and cool, starry nights. Summer (June–August) is very hot. Spring and autumn give the most spectacular dune photography light.
