Overview

We organise guided private morocco desert tours from Agadir to M'hamid and the Erg Chigaga dunes, with stops at Aït Benhaddou, Ouarzazate and the Draa Valley along the way. This 3-day, 2-night morocco desert tour itinerary includes a 4x4 desert crossing, a camel ride into the dunes and overnight stays in a traditional Berber camp — among the wildest sahara desert tours morocco offers from the coast. Travellers often pair it with our Marrakech desert tours page or the longer 4-day desert tour from Marrakech for a fuller Sahara experience.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Agadir - Taroudante - Taliouine - Foum Zguid - Erg Chegaga

Begin your private Sahara desert tour from Agadir with Local Morocco Tours, your dedicated desert specialist. After hotel pickup, we drive to Taroudant — known as "Little Marrakech" — to wander the vibrant spice and clothing souks and, if time allows, visit a women's cooperative. We then continue to Taliouine, the heart of Morocco's saffron country, to taste a glass of saffron tea, before pushing on to Foum Zguid and the towering Erg Chigaga dunes. You will enjoy a spectacular sunset and a camel ride, and spend the night in a traditional Berber bivouac under a sky full of stars.

Day 2

Erg Chigaga - Iriqui Lake - Taroudante - Ouarzazate

After sunrise and breakfast we set off in 4x4 vehicles back towards Foum Zguid, this time crossing the dry bed of Lake Iriqui. We continue to Ouarzazate, with time to take in the Foum Zguid region along the way. Dinner and overnight stay in a hotel.

Day 3

Ouarzazate - Marrakech - Agadir

Today our three-day Agadir to Chigaga journey continues as we cross the High Atlas Mountains to Aït Benhaddou — a UNESCO World Heritage kasbah — before arriving in Marrakech for a short guided visit. We then transfer you back to Agadir. Local Morocco Tours will be glad to craft a flawless Chigaga Sahara desert tour for you, your family, your friends or your group.

Route map

Departing from Agadir

Erg Chigaga is Morocco’s most remote dune field — a 40km expanse of golden sand accessible only by 4x4 or camel, with no paved road and almost no visitors compared to Merzouga. Departing from Agadir, the route takes three days and follows the Anti-Atlas and Draa Valley south-east to the oasis of M’Hamid, then off-road into the desert proper. The Agadir departure via Taroudant and Taliouine is the most scenic approach to Chigaga from the Atlantic coast.

Day 1 drives from Agadir through the Anti-Atlas to Zagora, stopping at Taliouine’s saffron cooperative and the Draa Valley palm groves. Day 2 continues south along the Draa to M’Hamid and then off-road by 4x4 across the gravel reg to Erg Chigaga — the 90-minute piste crossing is part of the adventure. Overnight in a private tented camp at the edge of the erg with no electricity and a sky full of stars.

Day 3 returns to Agadir via the same anti-Atlas route, with time for a camel trek in the dunes at dawn before departure. Erg Chigaga is the right choice for travellers who want genuine Saharan solitude rather than the more accessible Merzouga experience. All 4x4 transfers, desert camp overnight, breakfasts, dinners, and camel trek are included. Request a quote.
