Itinerary

Day 1

Aït Benhaddou day trip from Marrakech and Ouarzazate excursion

On this one-day adventure from Marrakech we climb into the High Atlas and cross the spectacular Tizi n'Tichka pass. Our first stop is the kasbah of Telouet, the former stronghold of the Glaoui pashas. We continue to the magnificent kasbah of Aït Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site that has appeared in countless Hollywood productions. After exploring its earthen alleys we drive on to Ouarzazate to tour the famous Atlas film studios and the historic Taourirt kasbah. Ouarzazate is also a great base for optional add-ons such as a quad excursion or a camel ride. We return to your accommodation in Marrakech in the late afternoon. Local Morocco Tours runs this full-day private trip from Marrakech every day for couples, families and small groups.

Departing from Marrakech

Ait Benhaddou is 200km south of Marrakech — roughly two and a half hours by private vehicle over the High Atlas via the Tizi n’Tichka pass (2,260m). Your driver-guide collects you from your hotel early in the morning; the pass crossing takes about 90 minutes and is itself one of the most scenic drives in Morocco, with mountain villages, almond terraces, and panoramic Atlas views at the summit.

Ait Benhaddou ksar is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a starring role in Hollywood film history: Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, The Mummy, Babel, Spectre and Game of Thrones have all filmed here. A guided walk through the earthen towers and ancient grain stores takes 60-90 minutes. After Ait Benhaddou, the route continues 30km to Ouarzazate — the film city, with the Kasbah Taourirt (16th century) and the Atlas Film Studios.

Return to Marrakech in the afternoon via the same mountain pass. This day trip covers approximately 400km and is one of the most popular and visually impressive routes from Marrakech. Your driver-guide is available throughout for context, photo stops, and a recommended tagine lunch in Ouarzazate. Request a quote.

Ait Benhaddou is roughly 4 hours from Marrakech via the Tizi n'Tichka pass, with Ouarzazate a further 30 minutes. Our Marrakech to Ait Benhaddou day trip runs as a comfortable full-day loop with stops at viewpoints, an argan cooperative and lunch.

Is hotel pick-up included?

Yes. We pick you up directly from your Marrakech riad or hotel and drop you back at the same address — there is no central meeting point or shared coach.

Is this a private day trip?

Yes. This is a fully private Marrakech day trip with your own driver and air-conditioned 4x4 or minivan. Couples, families and small groups stay together throughout the day.

What's the best time of year to visit Ait Benhaddou?

Spring and autumn are ideal — clear light on the kasbah and comfortable temperatures. Summer is hot in the valley but still very doable in our air-conditioned vehicle, and winter brings dramatic snow on the Tizi n'Tichka pass.
