Our 3-day Mount Toubkal trek is an atlas mountains trek and high-altitude pairing for a Morocco desert tour — an ideal long weekend for active travellers, with experienced local guides, two nights in mountain accommodation and a guided toubkal trek to the summit at 4,167 metres. Many guests extend their trip with a 3-day Sahara desert tour from Marrakech for the perfect mountains-and-dunes combination.
Today you discover the best of the Atlas Mountains on a guided trek from Marrakech. After a morning transfer from your Marrakech hotel to Imlil via Asni, we hike up to Tizi n'Mzik with our trekking team, with stunning views over the Azzaden Valley. After a picnic lunch prepared by our cook, we continue our High Atlas hike to the village of Tamsoult at 2,250 metres, where you spend the night in the refuge/camp with dinner included.
After breakfast our 3-day Mount Toubkal trek continues to the waterfalls of Igholidn, then climbs up to the Tizi n'Ouagane mountain pass with breathtaking views of the Toubkal summit. From the pass we descend to the Toubkal Refuge at 3,207 metres, where we enjoy dinner and an overnight stay — Atlas Mountains trekking with Local Morocco Tours.
Today, after an early start, we climb to the summit of Mount Toubkal and enjoy the stunning panorama from the top — High Atlas peaks one way and the Sahara desert horizons the other. We then descend into the Ouanoukrim valley and, after lunch, continue down to Imlil. From there we transfer you back to your hotel in Marrakech. Local Morocco Tours will be happy to organise the perfect trekking and hiking tour in Morocco for your friends, family or group.

The 3-day Toubkal Trek is the recommended format for the summit: an acclimatisation day in the lower Atlas on Day 1 (visiting the Aremd village and the Sidi Chamharouch shrine at 2,310m), an ascent to the Refuge du Toubkal at 3,207m on Day 2, and the pre-dawn summit push on Day 3 (4,167m), returning to Imlil and then to Marrakech by late afternoon. The extra day compared to the 2-day version dramatically improves summit success rates by allowing the body to adjust to altitude.
The trailhead at Imlil is 65km south of Marrakech — 90 minutes by private vehicle through the High Atlas foothills. Your driver collects you from your Marrakech hotel in the morning of Day 1, and your certified FRMM mountain guide begins the trek from the Imlil registry. The ascent from Imlil to the summit and back is technical in winter (crampons and ice axe required November to April) and non-technical the rest of the year.
The 3-day format is suitable for reasonably fit travellers with no previous high-altitude experience. A private guide is mandatory above Imlil (Toubkal National Park regulations). All guide fees, mountain hut accommodation, meals on the mountain, and Marrakech hotel pick-up and return are included. Request a quote or see our full Atlas trekking collection.
Good general fitness is essential — expect 6 to 9 hours of walking on summit day, on steep, rocky terrain at altitude. The extra day vs. our 2-day trip helps you acclimatise. No technical climbing in summer; in winter, crampons and an ice axe are required and we provide them.
Private return transfers Marrakech–Imlil, an experienced local mountain guide, a cook, all meals during the trek, two nights of accommodation (Berber gîte plus Toubkal Refuge), and muleteers with mules to carry the heavy gear.
April to October is the easy summer season — clear skies and a snow-free summit ridge. November to March is a true winter ascent with snow and ice; the views are spectacular and the trek is quieter.
Yes — many guests pair this 3-day toubkal trek with a 3 or 4-day Morocco desert tour from Marrakech to Merzouga to combine the High Atlas summit with the Sahara dunes. Tell us your dates and we will design one combined itinerary.
