Frequently asked questions

How hard is it to climb Mount Toubkal?

Toubkal (4,167 m) is a non-technical trek — no ropes or climbing skills needed — but it is a strenuous high-altitude walk over two days, with a pre-dawn summit push on scree. Reasonable fitness and a head for long uphill days are enough; your guide sets a steady pace.

How many days do you need to climb Toubkal?

The standard Toubkal summit trek is 2 days: day one hikes from Imlil to the refuge (around 3,200 m), and day two is an early summit push and descent. Adding a day helps with acclimatisation and enjoyment.

Where do Atlas treks start?

Most treks start from Imlil, a Berber village about 90 minutes (65 km) by road from Marrakech. We pick you up in Marrakech and drive you to the trailhead.

Do I need a guide to trek in the Atlas?

Yes — a licensed mountain guide is required for Toubkal and strongly recommended for all Atlas treks. Ours are local, licensed and know the routes, weather and villages. It's included in every trek.

What is the best time to trek the Atlas Mountains?

Late spring to early autumn (May–October) is best for Toubkal and high routes. Winter ascents are possible but require crampons, an ice axe and winter skills. Lower village treks are pleasant much of the year.

Can I combine Atlas trekking with the Sahara?

Yes — our combined Atlas and Sahara tours pair mountain trekking with a night in the desert, so you get both landscapes on one private trip.

What should I pack for an Atlas trek?

Layered clothing for cold mornings and warm afternoons, sturdy broken-in hiking boots, sun protection, and a warm layer for the refuge. Mules carry the main loads; you carry a daypack. We'll send a full kit list when you book.
