Merzouga’s Erg Chebbi dunes are 680km east of Agadir — a full day’s drive, or split comfortably across two days on a four-day tour. The Agadir-to-Merzouga route is one of the longest approaches to the Sahara from any Moroccan city, but also one of the most rewarding: you cross the Anti-Atlas mountains, pass through the saffron region of Taliouine, traverse the Draa Valley palm groves, and arrive at the rose dunes of Erg Chebbi having seen a completely different Morocco from anything the Marrakech-based tours cover.

Four days from Agadir gives you two nights in the desert — a sunset and a sunrise in the dunes — and a return via the Dades Valley or the scenic N9 through Ouarzazate and the High Atlas. The southward route via the Anti-Atlas is quieter and less touristic than the Tizi n’Tichka approach from Marrakech, making for a more private experience overall.
