Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Marrakech - Atlas mountains - Imlil (1,740 m) - Toubkal Refuge (3,200 m)

Today you discover the best of the Atlas Mountains on a guided trek from Marrakech. We pick you up from your hotel and drive into the High Atlas to Imlil, where our Toubkal trek begins. After meeting our team, we hike up to Sidi Chamharouch for a short break, then continue the 2-day, 1-night Toubkal trek with our experienced mountain guide through stunning valleys. After a few more hours of hiking, we reach the Toubkal Refuge at 3,207 metres, where you enjoy dinner and an overnight stay in the High Atlas.

Day 2

Toubkal Refuge - Toubkal summit (4,167 m) - Imlil - End in Marrakech

After an early start we hike up to the summit of Toubkal at first light, with breathtaking panoramic views in every direction — High Atlas peaks one way, Sahara desert horizons the other. After savouring the summit, we descend back to the refuge in around two hours and, after lunch, continue the descent to Imlil. From there we transfer you back to your hotel in Marrakech.

Route map

Departing from Marrakech — Imlil trailhead

The Toubkal trek begins in Imlil, a Berber village at 1,740m altitude, roughly 65km south of Marrakech by road — about 90 minutes by private vehicle through the Moulay Ibrahim valley. Your private driver picks you up from your Marrakech hotel or riad in the morning and drops you at the trail registry in Imlil, where your certified mountain guide takes over. The approach to Imlil itself passes through several traditional Berber villages and gives you the first sense of High Atlas altitude and pace.

The 2-day Toubkal route ascends to the Refuge du Toubkal at 3,207m on Day 1 — a 4-5 hour climb via the Aremd valley with views back over the Marrakech plain. The summit attempt (4,167m, highest peak in North Africa) begins before dawn on Day 2 to catch the sunrise above the clouds and return to Imlil before the afternoon heat. Total ascent: approximately 2,400m over two days.

The 2-day format requires a reasonable base fitness — no technical climbing, but sustained steep ascent at altitude. For a more comfortable pace with an acclimatisation night, the 3-day Toubkal trek is recommended. All guide fees, mountain hut accommodation, meals on the mountain, and Marrakech pick-up and drop-off are included. Request a quote.

Frequently asked questions

How fit do I need to be for the 2-day Toubkal trek?

You should be in good general fitness — comfortable walking 6 to 8 hours a day on steep, rocky terrain at altitude. No technical climbing skills are needed in summer; in winter (Dec–Mar) crampons and an ice axe are required and we provide them.

What is included in the 2-day Toubkal trekking tour?

Private transfers Marrakech–Imlil and back, an experienced local mountain guide, a cook, all meals during the trek, accommodation at the Toubkal Refuge (3,207 m), and muleteers with mules to carry the heavy gear.

When is the best time to climb Mount Toubkal?

April to October offers the easiest conditions — clear skies, no snow on the summit ridge and warm valleys. November to March is a true winter climb with snow and ice; the views are spectacular but you need winter mountaineering kit.

Can I combine Toubkal with a Morocco desert tour?

Yes — many travellers pair this 2-day Toubkal trek with a 3 or 4-day Sahara desert tour from Marrakech to see both the High Atlas and the Merzouga dunes. Contact us and we will stitch the two itineraries together.
