Marrakech to Merzouga: route, stops & drive time
The full drive broken down — Tizi n’Tichka, Todra Gorge and how long each leg really takes.
This private 3-day desert tour from Marrakech to Merzouga crosses southern Morocco in a comfortable vehicle, taking in the Dades Gorges on the way to the Sahara. The route can be tailored to your personal needs and budget. After pick-up in Marrakech, we cross the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass to the UNESCO ksar of Aït Benhaddou, continue through Ouarzazate and the Dades Valley, then ride camels into the Erg Chebbi dunes for a night in a Sahara camp, before returning to Marrakech via the Draa Valley.
After pick-up from your hotel, we cross the High Atlas Mountains via the legendary Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 metres to reach the UNESCO-protected ksar of Aït Benhaddou, famous as a filming location for Kingdom of Heaven, Gladiator and Game of Thrones. We continue to Ouarzazate to tour the local film studios and the Taourirt Kasbah. After lunch, we travel via Skoura along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs to the Dades Valley for dinner and an overnight stay in a hotel or kasbah.
After breakfast we drive to the Todra Gorge, exploring its dramatic interior before heading back to the main road. Along the way we stop in Tinghir, Tinjdad and Erfoud — with a visit to the Marble Factory — then continue to Merzouga via Rissani, the ancient capital of the Tafilalt region and a former caravan hub. In Merzouga we meet the camel guide and ride into the Erg Chebbi sand dunes for sunset. We spend the night in a nomadic tent in the desert.
We rise early to catch the spectacular sunrise over the Sahara at Merzouga, then ride the camels back to the village. After breakfast, we drive towards Marrakech, stopping in Rissani, N'kob and Ouarzazate along the way, before arriving at your riad in Marrakech. At Local Morocco Tours, we will do everything we can to tailor a holiday in Morocco that is perfect for you, your family, your friends or your group.

Marrakech is the most popular departure point in Morocco for a Sahara desert tour — and for good reason. The city sits at the foot of the High Atlas Mountains, and the road south to Merzouga is one of the most scenic drives in North Africa: through the Tizi n’Tichka pass at 2,260m, past the UNESCO-listed Kasbah of Ait Benhaddou, through the film city of Ouarzazate, and then east along the Draa Valley into the Tafilalt oasis before the rose-red dunes of Erg Chebbi come into view.
Your driver-guide collects you from your Marrakech riad or hotel at 8–9 a.m., and the journey to Merzouga takes roughly seven to eight hours with photo stops. Two nights in a private desert camp gives you a sunset camel trek into the erg, an overnight under Saharan stars, and a sunrise walk in the dunes before breakfast — then the return leg via a different route so you don’t repeat the same road twice.
The three-day Marrakech-to-Merzouga tour works as a standalone desert experience or as the core of a longer Morocco circuit. Hotel or airport pick-up in Marrakech is included. Request a quote or browse our full collection of Marrakech desert tours.
Yes — three days is the standard length for this route. Day 1 crosses the High Atlas to Aït Benhaddou and the Dades Gorges, day 2 continues via Todra Gorge to a camel trek and overnight in the Merzouga dunes, and day 3 returns to Marrakech via the Draa Valley. Travellers with more time can extend it into a 4- or 5-day trip with extra stops.
Hotel or airport pick-up and drop-off in Marrakech, private air-conditioned transport, an experienced local guide, all dinners and breakfasts, hotel/riad accommodation plus one night in a desert camp, and the camel trek with desert guide. Lunches, soft drinks, admission fees and gratuities are not included.
You spend one night in a nomadic-style camp in the Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga, reached by camel at sunset. It's a shared Berber-tent setup with proper beds and dinner included; more private or luxury camp options can be arranged on request when booking.
We can leave whenever suits you, but 9 a.m. is the usual departure time so there's daylight for the Tizi n'Tichka pass and the Aït Benhaddou stop on day one. Let us know your group size and preferred accommodation level when you book.
