Marrakech to Merzouga: Route, Stops & Drive Time

June 2026 · 9 min read

The Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga at the end of the road from Marrakech

Marrakech to Merzouga is about 560 km (350 miles) and takes 8–9 hours of driving over the Tizi n'Tichka pass and through the pre-Sahara valleys. There is no motorway shortcut, and frankly you wouldn't want one — the road itself is the reason people remember this trip. After more than a decade running this route, here is exactly how it breaks down, where to stop, and how long to give it.

How far is Marrakech to Merzouga, and how long does it take?

The distance is roughly 560 km via the N9 and N10, the national roads that climb the High Atlas and then follow the Dadès and Todra valleys east toward the dunes. Driven without real stops it's an 8–9 hour day. But the route passes a UNESCO kasbah, a film-studio town, and two of Morocco's most dramatic gorges — so almost everyone splits it over two days, arriving at the Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga on the afternoon of day two in time for a sunset camel ride. That two-day rhythm is exactly how our 3-day Marrakech to Merzouga desert tour is built.

Should you do it in one day? (Short answer: no)

You can reach Merzouga from Marrakech in a single long day. We don't recommend it. You'd arrive after dark, skip every worthwhile stop, and spend your only desert evening too tired to enjoy it. The whole point of this route is the slow reveal — snow-dusted Atlas peaks giving way to red kasbahs, palm oases and finally the orange wall of the dunes. Give it the time it deserves.

The best stops between Marrakech and Merzouga

Here's the route in the order you'll meet it, heading east:

  • Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m) — the High Atlas crossing, about 2 hours from Marrakech. Switchback views, Berber villages clinging to the slopes, and a noticeable temperature drop.
  • Ait Ben Haddou — the UNESCO-listed earthen kasbah that's appeared in Gladiator and Game of Thrones. Worth an hour to climb to the top for the valley view. (Our 2-day Ait Ben Haddou & Ouarzazate tour is built entirely around this stretch if you're short on time.)
  • Ouarzazate — "the door of the desert," home to Atlas Film Studios and the Taourirt Kasbah. A natural lunch stop.
  • Dadès Valley — the "Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs," with its famous serpentine road and rose-coloured rock formations. A popular overnight on day one.
  • Todra Gorge — 300-metre canyon walls a few metres apart, with a stream running through. A short, flat walk between the cliffs is one of the trip's highlights.
  • Erg Chebbi / Merzouga — the dunes themselves, rising up to 150 m. Camel trek into camp, sunset over the sand, dinner and Berber drumming under the stars.

When is the best time to drive this route?

March to May and September to November are ideal — warm days, cool desert nights, clear Atlas passes. Summer is hot in the dunes (we shift camel rides to dawn and dusk), and in winter the Tizi n'Tichka can briefly close after snow. For a month-by-month breakdown, see our guide to the best time to visit the Sahara.

What does it cost, and how do most people travel it?

Almost no one self-drives this for a first Morocco trip — the rewarding way is a private driver-guide who knows where to stop, when to leave to beat the heat, and which desert camp is worth the camel ride. A private 3-day Marrakech–Merzouga tour with car, fuel, driver, camp and meals typically lands in the mid-range per person depending on group size and camp standard. Request a quote with your dates and group size for an exact, all-in figure.

How many days should you give it?

3 days is the sweet spot for Marrakech–Merzouga–Marrakech: day one to the Dadès or Todra, day two to the dunes and the camp, day three back. With 4 days you slow down and add Skoura's palm grove or a second desert night — see the 4-day Marrakech to Merzouga tour. If you'd rather end in Fes instead of doubling back, the 3-day Marrakech to Sahara and Fes route crosses the country one way. Browse every option on our tours from Marrakech page.
