If you want the towering, postcard Sahara dunes and have at least three days, choose Merzouga. If you're short on time and want the desert in two days from Marrakech, choose Zagora. That's the honest one-line answer we give travellers every week. Here's the full comparison so you can decide with confidence.
Merzouga sits beside Erg Chebbi — the classic Sahara dunes that rise up to 150 metres in smooth orange waves. It's the image most people picture. The catch: it's about 560 km from Marrakech, an 8–9 hour drive, so it needs three days to do well.
Zagora is much closer — roughly 360 km, or about 6–7 hours — which is why it works as a 2-day desert trip. The trade-off is the dunes: Zagora's are lower and more scattered, set in a stony, palm-fringed desert rather than a sea of tall sand.
There's a third option people miss. Beyond Zagora, past the village of M'hamid, lie the Erg Chigaga dunes — as tall and dramatic as Erg Chebbi but far more remote, reached partly off-road. If you want grand dunes and fewer crowds, Chigaga is the answer. Our 3-day Marrakech to Chigaga desert tour is built for exactly that traveller.
Choose Merzouga if this is your one Moroccan desert trip and you want the big dunes — book the 3-day Marrakech to Merzouga tour. Choose Zagora if you only have two days and still want a real camel trek and a night under the stars — the 2-day Marrakech to Zagora tour is the most efficient way to taste the Sahara. Not sure? Compare every length on our tours from Marrakech page, or see how the longer drive breaks down in our Marrakech to Merzouga route guide.
The seasons are the same for both: spring and autumn are ideal, summer is hot, winter nights are cold but clear. Full breakdown in our best time to visit the Sahara guide.
Merzouga has the bigger, more dramatic Erg Chebbi dunes but needs 3 days. Zagora is closer and works in 2 days with smaller dunes. Pick Merzouga for the iconic Sahara, Zagora when time is tight.
Zagora: 2 days from Marrakech. Merzouga: 3 days, because it's ~560 km away.
Merzouga — Erg Chebbi rises up to 150 m. Zagora's dunes are lower and more scattered.
Chigaga (beyond Zagora via M'hamid) has dunes as big as Erg Chebbi but is far more remote and quieter — great for a 3-day tour from Marrakech.
