How Much Does a Morocco Desert Tour Cost?

June 2026 · 8 min read

The Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga — the destination of a Morocco desert tour

The honest answer is: it depends on four things — private or shared, how many days, your camp standard, and your group size. Rather than quote a number that's wrong by next season, here's how desert-tour pricing actually works, so you can judge any quote you're given and know where the real value is.

What actually drives the price

  • Private vs shared. A shared group tour splits the car and driver across many people, so it's the cheapest entry point. A private tour costs more but the vehicle, driver-guide and schedule are yours alone.
  • Group size (for private tours). The fixed cost of a private 4x4 and driver is the same whether two or six people travel, so the per-person price drops sharply as your group grows. A couple pays more each than a group of four.
  • Number of days. A 2-day Zagora trip costs less than a 3-day Merzouga tour, which costs less than a week-long grand tour.
  • Camp standard. This is the biggest single lever. A standard Berber camp versus a luxury camp with private bathrooms can change the price meaningfully.

What's usually included

A typical private Morocco desert tour price covers:

  • Private transport with a driver-guide, and fuel
  • A camel trek into the dunes
  • One or more nights in a desert camp
  • Breakfasts and dinners

Usually not included: lunches, drinks, entry tickets to optional sites, tips, and add-ons like a quad ride or sandboarding. Always ask — the difference between "all meals" and "half board" is exactly where surprise costs hide.

Private vs group: which is worth it?

Group tours win on price. Private tours win on everything else — you set the departure time, choose where to stop, travel at your own pace, and get a guide who's focused on your trip. For couples, families and anyone who values flexibility, the private upgrade is usually worth it. We explain the trade-offs in detail in our guide to building a personalised tour.

How to get the best value

  • Fill the car. Travelling as a small group of 3–6 splits the private cost the most efficiently.
  • Go in shoulder season. Spring and autumn bring the best camp rates and the best weather — see our best time to visit the Sahara guide.
  • Book direct with a local operator. Buying from a foreign reseller adds a margin for the same tour run by the same local team on the ground.
  • Compare like for like. A cheaper quote with a basic camp and fewer meals isn't really cheaper.

Where the desert tours start

Most travellers depart from Marrakech — see all tours from Marrakech. You can also start from Casablanca, Fes or Tangier, which changes the route and the price. New to the route? Read our Marrakech to Merzouga route guide and how many days you need in Morocco.
