Chefchaouen in a day: the blue city guide
What to see in the blue city, and how long is genuinely enough.
This is one of our most popular short tours from Tangier: a private 2-day (1-night) trip into the Rif Mountains to discover Chefchaouen, Morocco's blue city. Travellers wanting the dunes too usually pair it with a longer 3-day Sahara desert tour from Marrakech or request a tailor-made quote for a combined northern-plus-Sahara loop.
You will discover the best destinations on this private Morocco tour departing from Tangier. This morning we drive to Chefchaouen, often called the blue city. Its Berber name "Chefchaouen" means "look at the horns". We enjoy a scenic walk through the medina to explore the blue and white washed walls. We also visit the kasbah museum and you have a free afternoon. Overnight in a local riad.
Today our 2-day Tangier tour to Chefchaouen and back continues. Enjoy optional hiking or trekking activities. We then drive back to Tangier and drop you off at your hotel, where the tour ends. We will be happy to organise the perfect private Morocco tour from Tangier for your friends, family, or group with Local Morocco Tours.
English, Spanish, French, and more languages are available upon request.
We depart from your hotel at your requested time — usually at 8:00 am. Let us know how many people are travelling, your travel date, and the accommodation category: standard or luxury.
Tangier is Morocco’s northernmost city and the natural entry point from Europe — 14km across the Strait of Gibraltar from Spain by high-speed ferry. A two-day private tour from Tangier to Chefchaouen covers the first essential contrast of northern Morocco: the cosmopolitan port city that was an international zone for half the 20th century, then the mountain village painted entirely in blue.
Chefchaouen is 120km south-east of Tangier by road, a journey of two to two and a half hours through the Rif Mountains. The road rises quickly out of Tangier through Tetouan — a whitewashed city with its own distinct Andalusian heritage — and then climbs into the Rif highlands before descending to Chefchaouen in its valley setting. Arriving by early afternoon gives you the best light for the blue medina photography and a relaxed first evening.
Day 2 is unhurried in Chefchaouen before the drive back to Tangier or onward to Fes. This two-day format is popular with travellers arriving by ferry from Tarifa or Algeciras and wanting to begin their Morocco journey in the mountains rather than the desert. Hotel pick-up and drop-off in Tangier included. Request a quote.
Two days, one night is the comfortable minimum for the round trip — late afternoon arrival in Chefchaouen for a sunset photo walk, then a full morning in the medina before driving back to Tangier.
Hotel pick-up and drop-off in Tangier, a private air-conditioned vehicle, an English-speaking driver, fuel and one night in a Chefchaouen riad. Meals and entry fees are not included.
Yes — the road is short and paved and Chefchaouen's medina is genuinely magical for kids who like photography. Booster seats can be added on request at no extra charge.
March to June and September to November give the best mix of mild Rif weather and clear skies for photos. Summers are warm but shaded; winters can be rainy in the mountains.
