Erg Chigaga is Morocco’s most remote and least-visited dune field — reachable only by 4x4 piste or camel, with no paved road to the edge of the erg. A three-day tour from Marrakech gives you just enough time to reach it: the first day drives south over the Tizi n’Tichka, through Ouarzazate, and into the Draa Valley; the second day follows the track west to the oasis of M’Hamid and then into the desert proper to Chigaga.

The 4x4 transfer from M’Hamid to Erg Chigaga across the gravel reg takes roughly 90 minutes, and it is part of the experience — the landscape changes from flat piste to soft sand as the distant dunes grow larger. Camping at Chigaga is genuinely different from Merzouga: fewer visitors, a wider erg, and a silence that is hard to find elsewhere. Sunset and sunrise in the dunes, a fire at the camp, and a return via the Draa Valley palm groves complete the circuit.
